who am I, really?

I abandoned transportation in a four-mile multi-car pile-up off the interstate due to unexpected emails requesting interest in interviewing Lonely Whale co-founder Adrian Grenier the following half-hour for my publication. I dashed. Dr. Paula Quinn, my first professor at Western Kentucky University, coined an acronym for intermediate reporting to guarantee that we would become proficient reporters. It’s called PICPOT. It is considered news if it fits at least three of the six criteria: proximity, impact, conflict, prominence, oddity, and timeliness. When my mom, the driver, recalls my own backstory for my article, PICPOT floods my mind.

The run-up to Grenier's appearance as a guest speaker for the Think Twice, Drink Twice Foundation at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival cemented my interest in intersecting environmental media and live arts. I avoided the bottles, pamphlets and other debris listed in my late-grandmother’s complaints when cleaning South Central Kentucky’s largest stadium. When her WKU supervisor switched to cheaper cleaning brands, causing her skin to burn, she felt helpless on the edge of retiring after 20 years. Her silence inspired me to seek a Bachelor of Arts in news-editorial journalism and to report on the adversities of others.

Stories through extracurriculars in undergraduate studies include Louisvillian expats saving money hosting Kentucky Derby guests by outsourcing farmer's market discarded, unappealing produce and Appalachians petitioning for late-night dining hours rather than the campus convenience store sparked a campus-wide switch to paper straws, free campus ministry potlucks, and vegan dining for all-nighters. .

My trailblazing efforts to leave successors towards an excellent next chapter. News-beats on rural South environmental plights and its communities’ ties to music scenes prepares me for goals of communicating conservation through the live arts renovation. Venues serve as alternative classrooms, with fans listening to and following the lead of their favorite acts. Grenier's use of a tin bottle at Bonnaroo demonstrates that Black celebrities should actively support green causes, thereby marginalizing separate and uneven marketing platforms and sustainability inequities.

I learned to collect records by rummaging through my mother’s own, which she later sold to supplement extra funds for my AP exams following my grandmother’s death during the recession. Vintage reclaims its rightful place in the world with the assistance of parasocial relationships and social accountability, both aspects of my fashion and folklore research associating decade-defining hit, “Thrift Shop” for my minor in gender studies and autonomous news-internship.

Renovating music industry spaces as conversation starters is in line with Reverb, a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to large-scale, measurable change, and a hopeful summer experience for me. Arenas will revert to ancient temples of knowledge passed-down with PICPOT, rather than places I run to with press credentials.

testimonial

Natasha was my student in a demanding feature writing and research class at the WKU last spring where I was a visiting professor.   The course required an extensive profile of a leadership figure and a contextualized background piece into which information gathered for the biographical piece could be woven to produce a comprehensive article anchored in a minority community.

Natasha wrote about a leader for the girl scouts and described the contributions a troop made to the community in Bowling Green.  Natasha’s finished product reflected her diligence, interviewing and research skills and attention to detail. She met with me at various appointed times to discuss her progress on assignments, read assigned materials, and participated significantly in class where she dedicated herself with enthusiasm and commitment to top.

Natasha is a high energy individual whom, I am confident, would provide a talented, reliable addition to your organization. Should you require additional information, please either e-mail me at merlyn@utexas.edu  or call me at (512) 471-1979.

Sincerely,
