Some government agencies and media outlets have made strides in adopting more truthful language when discussing immigration. Since only an action can be considered illegal, the Associated Press Stylebook has long discouraged using the word "illegal" to refer to a person. John Daniszewski, AP's Vice President for Standards, has urged people to steer clear of negative language and be as impartial as possible when reporting on events along the US border. "Stay away from emotive terms like invasion, army, march, sneak, stealth, flood, inundation, surge, onslaught, and tidal wave," he wrote.
